博物館の最も重要な役割は、放置すれば失われる可能性のある資料を収集し、それらを後世に残すことである。それぞれの博物館が独自の資料を収集し、収蔵し活用している。

　御船町恐竜博物館では、古生物資料を中心に収集活動をおこなっている。特に、地域に分布する白亜紀層、御船層群に関する資料の収集につとめ、陸生脊椎動物化石の調査・収集作業を継続的におこなっている。このような御船層群の脊椎動物化石のコレクションは、他の博物館にはほとんど例がないもので、この博物館オリジナルの貴重な資料群である。

　私たちは化石から過去の生物の姿や生態を知ることができる。化石の研究にとって、博物館のコレクションは重要な役割を果たしている。コレクションの構築に必要なのは、野外で化石を見つけ、発掘することだけではない。研究室に持ち帰ってからおこなう化石のクリーニングや標本作製の作業に高度な技術と忍耐強い作業が必要なのである。

The most important role of Museum is to collect material that would be lost if left unattended in the wild and leaves it to future generations. Each Museum is unique, collects its own material and has its own collection.

Here in Mifune Dinosaur Museum (MDM), we are particularly focusing on extinct plants/ animals found in the Mifune group formation (Cretaceous layers) surrounding Mifune city. In fact, MDM is carrying out on an ongoing basis research and collection of terrestrial vertebrate fossils, making our collection such valuable and without any equivalent in other Museums.

Fossils are keys to understand earth’s past and by studying it we are able to understand extinct organisms and their ecosystems. However to study fossils, a good fossil preparation is necessary, just like preparation is necessary to build a good collection. Collection cannot be made only by excavating fossils, it is also necessary to bring the material to a laboratory and prepare it, using advanced technologies and techniques, before adding the fossil to the collection.
