日本初の恐竜化石は1978年に岩手県の岩泉町で発見された。その後、熊本県御船町(1979年）、群馬県神流町（1981年）で化石が発見され、国内での恐竜化石探索のきっかけを作った。しかし、これらの恐竜化石産地の中で今も組織的な発掘調査が継続して行われ、一定の成果を上げているのは熊本県御船地域のみである。1980年代後半から、手取層群分布地域では福井県を中心に組織的な発掘調査が実施されるようになり、多くの恐竜化石が産出するようになった。最近では、兵庫県、長崎県、鹿児島県などでも新たに恐竜化石が発見され、組織的な調査によって多くの化石が収集されている。

The first discovery in 1978 of the first Japanese dinosaur fossil in the Iwate prefecture’s Iwaizumi city was followed respectively in 1979 and 1981 by the discovery of new dinosaur fossils in Kumamoto pref. Mifune city and Gunma pref. Kamiryu city.

Those successive discoveries started dinosaur fossil search all over Japan. However even if from this moment systematic excavations were continuously performed, only Kumamoto pref. Mifune yielded positive results. From the late 1980, systematic excavation are set and focused in Fukui prefecture’s formation resulting in the discoveries of large number of dinosaurs. Recently, excavations are made in Hyogo pref., Nagasaki pref. and Kagoshima pref., where new dinosaur fossils and large amount of fossils are excavated.
