小学生が発見したミフネリュウの化石が日本にも肉食恐竜が生息していたことを初めて証明した

ミフネリュウは日本で初めて発見された肉食恐竜の化石である。この化石は昭和54 (1979)年8月に小学1年生によって御船町上梅木地区の御船層群下部層の露頭で採取された。

大きさ約7.3 cmの歯の化石で、縁には鋸歯と呼ばれる細かいギザギザがある。薄くて細長い形や小さい鋸歯といった特徴は北アメリカで栄えたティラノサウルス類の歯とは異なる。

この化石の発見は、白亜紀の「日本」に肉食恐竜が生息していたことを初めて示すとともに、たくさんの恐竜化石が国内の地層の中に保存されていることを予感させるものであった。

In August 1979, an elementary school student found in the lower part of the Mifune formation near Kami-umeki a dinosaur tooth that will become the first japanese record of a meat-eating dinosaur fossil later nicknamed Mifune dragon.

With an approximate length of 7.3cm (2.87 inches), this tooth is still wearing on its edge small serrations. The tooth, with its thin, elongated shape and small serrations is quite different from those of the flourishing North American Tyrannosaurid living at the same time.

This fossil discovery has, along with the fact that it proved carnivorous dinosaur lived in “Japan” during the cretaceous, given us a preview of the dinosaur fossil preserved in the japanese domestic strata.
