赤色泥岩層は、各時代の陸成層に特徴的に見られる。この赤色は、含まれる赤鉄鉱によるものであり、堆積した泥が酸化環境に置かれていたことを示している。内部には根の化石，石灰質ノジュール，異方性の鏡肌が観察されることから、これらは堆積当時に生成された土壌（古土壌）だと考えられる。

Red mudstone layer can be observed characteristically in stratification that formed on land of each era. The red color of the mudstone is due to the hematite contained inside, indicating that the accumulated mud was deposited in an oxidizing environment. As roots fossils, calcareous nodules and anisotropic slickenside can be observed inside the rock, we can assume that this soil was generated at the time (paleosol).
