白亜紀の御船の空を飛んでいたのは長い首を持つアズダルコ科の翼竜であった

御船町の天君ダムの周辺では、重要な翼竜の断片化石が何点か見つかっている。

そのうちのひとつ、細長い形をした頸椎骨（首の骨）は、御船に存在した翼竜がアズダルコ科の翼竜であったことを示している。発見された１つの頸椎骨の後半部は、首の中央付近の頸椎骨だと考えられ、この翼竜が翼を広げると約２メートルの幅があった。

アズダルコ科の翼竜化石は世界各地から見つかっており、国内でも兵庫県や長崎県の白亜紀後期の地層から発見されている。アズダルコ科は白亜紀後期には世界中に分布していたのだろう。

Important fragmentary pterosaur fossils had been found in the vicinity of the Mifune’s Amakimi dam.

Among them, one particular elongated cervical bone (neck bone) drew attention and was identified as belonging to an Azhdarchid pterosaur. One of the rear half cervical bone found was identified as cervical bone belonging to the center part of the neck of the animal. When spreading its wings, this pterosaur would have reached a width of about 2 meter.

Azhdarchid pterosaur being a successful group during Cretaceous, their fossils can be encountered locally in Hyogo and Nagasaki prefecture’s late Cretaceous layer and all around the world.
