恐竜はトカゲやヘビと同じ爬虫類。祖先と子孫の関係で分類すると、恐竜は「トリケラトプス、スズメ、サルタサウルスに共通する祖先とその子孫のすべてを含む一群」と定義され、鳥類は恐竜に含まれる。

恐竜は、2億3千万年前に２足歩行の主竜類から進化し、6600万年前には鳥類だけを残して絶滅した。南極を含め、すべての大陸からその化石が発見されている。

Dinosaurs roamed the earth 230 million years ago and nearly disappeared 66 million years ago, only leaving the birds to survive.
