世界で初めて命名された恐竜はメガロサウルスである。この名前は1824年にイギリスのウイリアム・バックランドによって命名された。

恐竜（dinosaur)は、Dinos（＝おそろしい）sauros（＝トカゲ） という言葉を組み合わせたものである。この言葉はイギリスの解剖学者リチャード・オーエンによって1841年に初めて提唱された。オーエンがこの言葉を初めて使ったときに知られていた化石は、メガロサウルス、イグアノドン、ヒラエオサウルスの3種類の化石だけであった。             

The world oldest named dinosaur is the Megalosaurus. William Buckland in the United Kingdom named it in 1824. Dinosaur comes from the combination of 2 ancient greek word: “Deinos” meaning terrible and “Sauros” meaning lizard. This word was first proposed by the British anatomist Richard Owen in 1841. At the time when Owen used for the first time this word, only 3 dinosaurs were known: the Megalosaurus, the Iguanodon and the Hylaeosaurus.
